Snowy Cabin

Snowy Cabin in the Woods-KidzArt at Lesson at Hanover Elementary

With 12-14" inches of snow falling this past weekend in Minnesota, we had the perfect picture for our students to draw this week at Hanover Elementary.

Here is the example the students learned to draw from and the Keywords we looked at. Students learned how to draw snow using countor lines and then to just add a little bit of shading to give it a more realistic look.  But most of the snow was left white and then at the end students added details with glitter paint and metallic markers.

Students had great ideas for ways to make their picture unqiue and their own.  Some students changed colors, added animals, or added a lake (something that we see all over in the land of 10,000 lakes).  At KidzArt we encourage students to brainstorm ways to make their picture different as they are the artist.  But if they want to copy the example that is ok too!

We have all new classes coming up at Hanover Elementary. Visit Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Community Education for information and registration for KidzArt classes.

Winter Wonderland Workshops

The first three weeks of December are always a great time for KidzArt Minnesota!  We are excited about the start of our holiday/winter workshops throughout schools in the NW Metro area.  Today at St. Michael Catholic School in St. Michael, MN we drew a Gingerbread house!  This is a favorite picture among KidzArt staff to draw with students.  There are so many ways for students to make this drawing their own with new designs, patterns, and different color choices.

We looked at the example picture for inspiration.  Then students followed along as the instructor showed them how to complete the drawing.

Works in progress. After drawing the outline students added details and colored their pictures.

Look at how wonderfully different each drawing is even though everyone started out looking at the same drawing.

Animals on Icebergs

At our weekly class at The Studio at Rush Creek in Maple Grove our KidzArt students learned out to draw animals floating on icebergs!  We run weekly art classes for kids-elementary ages from 9am-10am and preschool ages from 10am-10:45am.

Kids love drawing animals and this week our elementary age students learned how to draw a walrus while the preschool students worked on drawing a polar bear.  Both ages groups then used Prismacolor markers and Water Soluble Crayons to color their pictures.  The crayons are a great and easy way to create the look of painting with watercolors but without the hassle of watercolor sets.  All students need to do is to color how they would with a crayon and then paint water on top!

Art Classes for Kids

The Program Directors of KidzArt in Minnesota, Marilyn Binkley and Lisa Vitkus, meet while teaching middle school art together. Marilyn has a B.S in Art Education and a Minor in Art History from the Pennsylvania State University. Lisa attended Hamline Univeristy where she received a B.A in Fine Arts, and then went on to the University of Minnesota where she obtained her masters in Art Education. They taught for two years together before the art program was reduced and there was no longer a need for two teachers. The chance came along to buy the KidzArt franchise in this area, and they decided to seize this opportunity and take their knowledge of art and teaching down a new career path.

Since March of 2008 Marilyn and Lisa have been offering art programs to kids around the Twin Cities.  KidzArt offers classes, camps, workshops, birthday parties, and projects for events such as reunions and parties.  What a great way to spread their love of art through all these different venues and to kids of all ages (2-99!).  KidzArt is not just for "kids".  Work team building activities or a ladies night of creativity are also ways Marilyn and Lisa share their love of art.
